Arterial Aneurysms

A Historical Review

This book is addressed to fellows in training, vascular surgeons and even more.
To quote Denton Cooley: ‘ This book, which will not soon be surpassed or even equalled, will be a superb reference for vascular surgeons, medical students, surgical residents, historians, and anyone else concerned with aneurysms and dissections’. ( Ann. Thorac. Surg. 2005; 80; 2424)

The book is, in essence, predominantly concerned with the gross physical manifestations of aneurysms. The history of aneurysms is covered in three chapters: aneurysms as seen in antiquity and during the Middle Ages, from the 16th century to the mid-19th century, and from the mid-19th century to the present day. The history of aortic dissection is discussed in a separate chapter. In each chapter, changes in the relative frequency of the underlying causes – such as trauma, syphilis, other infections, hypertension, atherosclerosis and genetic disorders are all listed. Discussions on the etiology and pathogenesis of the disease are followed by the history of medical and surgical treatment throughout the different periods. (See Table of Contents.)
